Pathway to Leadership

As part of Fulton’s continuing commitment to our values of Cultivating Excellence and Building a Foundation for all to be Successful, this information below has been provided for you to develop your skills and grow within the Fulton Schools of Engineering. You will find development opportunities listed here and additionally within Leadership and Workforce Development.

Emerging Supervisor Pathway:

The Emerging Supervisor Pathway (ESP) program is a semester-long self-paced program that takes place online, with the exception of the final Capstone class that is held in the HR office at the Tempe Campus. Upon completion of the entire class, including the capstone course, you will receive one-year equivalency of supervisory experience.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time employee at ASU for at least one year by the course’s start date.
  • You currently are not in a full supervisory position or have participated in the SDP (Supervisor Development Program).
  • You have approval from your supervisor to participate.

Only 25 staff will be selected for this class per semester. Individuals identified or encouraged to participate should submit a paragraph about how they might benefit from the course along with their supervisor’s contact information to Pam Brooks. You will be added to the potential list of attendees in the Fall or Spring of each year.

Leadership Skill Development:

After completing ESP, you will work with your supervisor on leadership tasks to be completed over a year’s time frame. In that time, you will complete the following:

  • Demonstrate the ability to facilitate a team meeting, including creating the agenda, setting necessary ground rules, encourage bold thinking, and building a fostering a community of learning and collaboration through effective psychological safety.
  • You will take on leading 2-3 employees in your area.  You will be applying some of what you have learned from your class as you begin to work with and develop others. While leading, you will have EDGE conversations with employees quarterly and focus on ways to develop the skill sets of individuals.
  • You will work with your supervisor to hire a new team member, either in real-time or to prepare for one that may be needed in the future. You will complete the process from start to finish, including building the job description, posting the role, interviewing, extending the offer, and onboarding.

Supervisory Development Program:

After completing all of the new assigned leadership activities over a year or longer, you are now eligible to apply for the Supervisory Development Program (SDP), run by Leadership and Workforce Development.

Individuals promoted or hired into a supervisory role learn about university policies and procedures, self-awareness, personal work style, and management strategies that foster collaborative engagement and performance. Participants attend six in-person sessions at the Tempe campus — five full days and one half-day. Parking validation is provided. A remote option is not available at this time.

Eligibility:

  • Current supervisors or newly hired full-time supervisors may apply. The program runs each year during spring, summer, and fall. The program fee is $600, covering materials, supplies, and lunches. ASU departments pay the fee; individuals may not pay out of pocket.

For additional information or questions about any of these leadership opportunities, contact Pamela Brooks.
